Where did Toy Story come from? You’ll find on our blog an introduction to the animated feature which begins by acknowledging the original toymaker, John Lasseter — “I’m John Lasseter.” You also might remember that a long time ago there were toymakers who sold products in the United States.

Is “Toy Story” based on real life events? A few years back, the movie was supposed to be based on a book, but it was ultimately decided not to be based on that source material, so the movie came about from a collection of toys of the 1930’s which Mr. Lasseter happened to have.

Which character is played by Woody Woodpecker? He actually plays by himself, but is often seen in combination with other characters, sometimes as a substitute for Woody. It is unclear whether Mr. Lasseter wrote the voices for Woody or if Woody is merely voicing a character who has been used in many other films and TV shows in the 70’s and 80’s, as well.

Can you tell us who the children are? The film opens with Woody’s little sister, played by the late, great Ann-Margret, singing “Koi No Yokan,” the theme song for the classic film, the famous koi pond from Japan. Then it moves into the playground where Woody and his friends are waiting for their turn. From there you see them enjoying a “Tiny Tots” ride, where toys have been tossed around. There is a “Play Time” where they run along a road in the forest. This is followed by the song, “All by Myself” by the pop group, “New Kids on the Block.” As the movie progresses, more and more kids are shown.

Can you tell us anything about the characters? The characters are quite diverse. They include Woody, the main toymaker; a young boy named Milhouse, in the role of his older half-brother; and the “mousetrap” toys; people who look like animals (that is, people with mouths, not humans).
