It is short for Chachas, which in Japanese sounds like “Cha-cha” or “Cha” or its phonetic variation, “Cha” “ChaCha.” This word means “I am” or “I am/are.” Thus, it means “I am in love”.
When did ChaCha begin? It was introduced in 1968 at the University of Tokyo as a course in psychology to students and faculty. That it became such a fixture of Japanese life and language is testimony to its enduring usefulness and meaning, despite its origins as an academic seminar.
A cha cha is an “I am” or “I am/are” or, sometimes, an “I am/are you.” The two are often combined in Japanese; the expression “cha cha are you” means “you are are an I am/are.” When I hear students use “ChaCha-chorinzu (I’m good at talking and I do things very well), I think of myself.”

ChaCha was created by Kyoraku Mitsuo, a lecturer at Shinshi College of Education in Tokyo who is the president of Japan’s Chiho University. He has made cha chi a prominent part of the way in which one speaks of others. When people say, “I am in love with you,” it often follows by “in love, with you.” The sound of that word is, thus, very powerful.
In fact, this is a word that is being incorporated into Japanese social language. When you speak with your girlfriend or boyfriend, you say, “ChaCha-chorinzu! I’m in love, with you.” With words like “cha” and “chorinzu,” which are relatively simple, the possibilities for expressing emotions are endless. With “ChaCha-chorinzu” you could also imply your affection for someone using words like “you’re good at listening,” “you’re good at listening to me,” or “you’re good at talking.”
