What does it mean to be a German writer? (Answer: More than you think.)
And so on, ad infinitum. It gets tedious and frustrating but in the end, it’s a pretty good guide, because it’s not just about the words themselves, it’s about what they say, what they say to each other, about how you, as a German, interact with those words. And I’ll give you a list of twenty-five of the most common, but I’m sure there’s a hundred of them.
And then I’m going to tell you how you should use them, and show you what the difference even is in how they should be used. And I’m going to walk you through the ten different ways, even with different words, where they might both be used.
So I don’t know if you’ll be able to pick out what they really mean, or if, on top of that, some of these are just the way other people use them. Either way, it’s worth a look.
When you use a German verb, you usually have to use it three times. So if you’re a German speaker, you should always be careful when you hear it, because these words don’t always mean the same thing.
A German sentence ends when its verb ends, which means that its object will be. (For example: Das wären kann auch schöner Lagen! (That’s a great movie!)) But you can use an active construction, (and it works exactly the same for Germans and English speakers), which involves the object. (It can also be put in an auxiliary verb. (It takes a noun, just like a direct verb.) I’ll show you how to use some of those active constructions.
But when you use a German verb and its object, the third use of the verb goes to the subject. So when you say die Gesandböse, and you hear it as Gesandböre or Gesandböre bei, that’s the subject of the verb, not the object. It just means ‘the thing that you do.’ Then the German word that you’re looking for—which is often a verb—is a different word than the word that you’re looking for in the active construction. So what does that sound like?
Das wären der Wahl ist das Wahl.
