Some experts say it is a no-brainer.
“The biggest argument is money,” Mr. Schiller said. “Health insurance pays for a lot of things, but some can’t be controlled by insurance. Those things include doctor visits, lab tests, dental care, prescription drugs and even some hospitalizations.”
The United Health Group Inc., the nation’s largest health insurance company, which pays for much of the family-planning services at Planned Parenthood clinics, has long said no, Planned Parenthood doesn’t cover life coaches.
“We have no intention of paying for a woman’s care, period,” United’s chief executive, Stephen Hemsley, said when Planned Parenthood announced the news this week.
“We don’t know of a provider in the United States that does, and if Planned Parenthood decides to create a life coaching program for Planned Parenthood, we’ll do our utmost to make sure that the costs are covered by our other insurance options.”
Planned Parenthood says Planned Parenthood health centers and the organization’s abortion-related clinics have done thousands of such counseling sessions. About two dozen of those clinics were among the clinics that were shuttered as part of the government shutdown.
“Planned Parenthood cares deeply for its patients — from the earliest days of pregnancy to the end of life,” a spokeswoman, Dawn Laguens, said in an e-mail. “If their health centers receive funding from insurance, they are the only provider of abortion care.”
Ms. Laguens added: “The Center for Medical Progress has produced evidence that the Center for Medical Progress used inappropriate and deceptive tactics and techniques for its abortion-related research. Planned Parenthood is one of the nation’s leaders when it comes to providing basic family planning services and contraception.”
Many experts in the field say the counseling is valuable in the long run.
“Health insurance has the capability to pay for everything, including these kinds of services. But some people feel it’s a no-brainer to pay out for their care,” said Dr. Robert Spitzer, a Boston primary care physician and professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “Some people simply must get these services.”
A handful of clinics that offer services to low-income women have taken that route. Planned Parenthood, St. Luke’s Riverside Church in Lexington, Va., provides an anti-stigma program based on the life coach technique, according to a church spokeswoman, Nancy Kortenaar.
