The last two weeks have been a whirlwind of action for the Minnesota Timberwolves. With the arrival of Kevin Love, the team has gained two starters — while taking out one of their stars. In the process, it’s created some chaos and confusion for the entire franchise.
After Love gave birth to his first child, many assumed that Minnesota would send Love off to the D-League and give him an extended run. Instead, they sent him on a three-game road trip that started last Thursday in Memphis, in which he played 20 minutes. It was another poor display, as Love struggled to score against the Grizzlies. While he didn’t make much of an effort down the stretch in Dallas, he was held scoreless in four of his remaining six games.
“The first two weeks have been all about Kevin trying to learn,” said coach Rick Adelman. “The third week is obviously where I’ll say the real growth is for Kevin, to see how he’s doing, to see the maturity level of what he’s capable of.”
There have been a few different interpretations of what happened with Love. The team says it wants him to be more vocal in his criticism and “to let it out.” According to his agent, he is not interested in re-signing with Minnesota.
It was during that road trip, as the Wolves watched their young players develop in front of their eyes from afar, that Minnesota decided to trade its All-Star center, according to a league source. In return, the Timberwolves sent a veteran that was looking to find a home.
