Not all people can play any song. Most can understand one or two songs by ear, but most can’t play anything. It’s not that they don’t believe in ukulele. They just wouldn’t know how to use it. Even some young ukulele players are so old that we can’t play them. The way we used to play had been used for years and years… until it became more difficult and more complicated. Nowadays more ukulele players are using ukulele because they can’t play the traditional way.
Did you learn it from a teacher or from someone else?
The teacher got me started when I was a kid. I played and played for about ten years when I was in high school. And even then, I only knew just a few songs. A few years ago, when I was about eighteen, I started to play piano again. It was a chance to use some music again. You had to study the music well and become proficient to play some good songs. You couldn’t always get a lesson from my teacher. A lot of the songs are songs that have been played by famous musicians and people like that. I was so eager to learn to play them again that I kept playing them until my first attempt at making a tune and I got quite frustrated with the way all the ukulele players were playing it… I played it a few times and felt pretty good and was wondering why I hadn’t managed to learn to play a lot more songs before this.
How did it develop from there? And after this I didn’t learn a lot of songs?
That was when I started to learn how to read song. I learned how to read the ukulele from the time they taught it to me, and from that I tried to learn more songs. At the same time some of the older ukulele players started playing some songs for me (at least my teacher taught me how to play the songs). I was so grateful because I knew that he really tried to help me, and that he was a good teacher. But he was also very rude. So I decided to drop ukulele after a few years. Some of the older ukulele players became very active and took up ukulele again.
