In late November, a mysterious tweet from the official @USArmyMajGen account prompted a firestorm of criticism regarding his comments calling President Trump a “white supremacist.” The Army, while declining an interview with Mashable, issued a clarification via Twitter at the time:
The statement says the army is an institution that is focused on “keeping peace in the world” and “defending the nation from threat from around the world.” Maj. Gen. Robert Caslen, the deputy chief of staff of the U.S. Army (USAR), said the president of the United States is a “threat” to America and the nation is the “one true and final authority on who is a threat to national safety.”
But his choice of words is a matter of disagreement:
Caslen’s tweet, and subsequent media statements to the effect that the country is fighting to keep America safe from terrorist attack is not consistent with the military’s mission since 9/11.
“I think it’s dangerous for the government to use the rhetoric of protecting America’s homeland to justify the actions of its citizens,” says James J. Casper, an Army veteran and former Army intelligence officer turned author. “It’s the right way to do it, but it’s not the only way.”
Casper, author of The Enduring American Hero, believes the president’s comments should be seen not as the “enemy within,” but rather as “the enemy beyond America’s borders.”
Casper is referring to the Islamic State or other extremist groups that do not live in the western world, but are operating overseas, targeting civilians. These forces and more like them are the ones President Trump refers to as terrorists.
