The man suspected of shooting a man and woman outside their south suburban home in a brazen, premeditated murder-suicide early Monday apparently acted alone, a district attorney told The Associated Press.
The victims, 23 and 43, were killed during a midnight shooting in their home, which also caught the eye of a passing motorist, Chicago Chief of Detectives Anthony Gugliemo said at a news conference this afternoon. A 29-year-old man from Illinois was arrested Saturday and is accused of firing the fatal shots, he said.
Gugliemo called the slaying a “tragic event” in which the shooter “felt that he had the approval and protection of the community” and was “very disturbed and disturbed by the situation” before it became a crime scene.
He didn’t immediately release the names of the victims or give a possible motive for the killing. He said police believe that the shooter killed himself because authorities couldn’t revive him.
It was the single deadliest killing in Chicago’s history. The previous high was 22: A couple fatally shot six people after hitting a gas station at about 11:10 p.m. Jan. 29, 1984, in the South Loop. One person died at the scene, two died in a hospital and four were died later in surgery.
Police found one dead man in the garage on the second floor of the home, and found 23 victims in a living room and the backyard, including two children, Gugliemo said.
A 31-year-old man was arrested about 2 a.m. Sunday outside the shooting on the 700 block of West North Side Avenue, where about 300 family and friends were gathered for a Christmas party.
