The casino sued me for trademark infringement. I fought them in the court of arbitration, and after 10 years, they lost.
They filed some claim that if I’d agreed to not call myself a poker shark, they would have paid me $966,000. The dispute was never settled, because I have the right to refuse to pay.
I was awarded nearly half the amount I would have received as the casino had their claim turned out to be right, although the court awarded them about $400,000.
This is not my first rodeo. Poker players have faced these sorts of challenges before, of course, but they always win.
It took years to get my legal affairs sorted, but now I’m happy with getting my money back.

What are some of the reasons people can use to dismiss complaints about their poker strategy?
I see it as a lot of things. If somebody asks what your strategy is, and you respond with “This is what I think I play”, or you say that you can lose $500 but that $100 goes to your bet, I understand that is a good argument. But you need to prove it.
Sometimes people will say, “Wow you’re so good, how can you lose at all?”
The biggest misconception seems to be that poker is about memorising an exact strategy; that is really not true. There’s a lot of other factors involved in it.
We know that in the first year of poker, when you’re new to the game and your hand is random, you’re going to make mistakes.
The second year isn’t any better; you’re going to make more mistakes.
You could argue that after 3-4 years you know how to play the game; after 5 years you know how you want to play it, so by the time you’re 30 you know what you want to play.
