Here is one of my favorite (though not always the easiest) exercises.
One of the reasons why I have so much fun training my eyes is that I love to focus my eyes on things. I love to stare at my children, and sometimes even as I write. I love to turn my gaze out to far, as if I have seen something really cool while I am still able to see.
When I try this exercise, I find that it’s as good as any practice I get out of working with my hands or using tools. No matter how hard I work, I can’t do it as well as I can with my eyes.
You can’t do it, but you can do it better, simply by trying! If you are looking for some visual exercises, try these five!
1. Create a series of six photographs. Each photograph represents something you have done for your eyes. The goal, then, is to add to your practice of working with your eyes. Each photographer has her own rules. I do not agree with them. I do not want to change their practices. What I do want to try is to make my eyes do things different, to take my eyes to places I have not been before.
2. Take photographs of things in your environment. This includes things that are in your kitchen, or in your house, or on the wall behind you. The purpose of this exercise is to give your eyes a place where they can do what they have been doing for years.
When I do this exercise, I usually have a plate of macaroni by my bed in the dark. For some reason, I am hungry for it. It is in the living room of my house. It is in my kitchen. I am going to look straight at it. It will serve as both a reference and a test. If I do not enjoy the macaroni right away, it will serve as a very clear reminder of what I am looking at.
If I am looking at the macaroni straight on, then it is not so much that I do not like the macaroni. I do have an aversion to it. What I am observing is that I like what I have seen. I like it a lot.
It is not as though I am looking at it at all, or that I am looking from behind. What I am taking my eyes to are its boundaries. I am looking at what is outside, and what I
