The man has been named as Suresh Kumar, an employee of BARC who worked in the company’s IT-centric area in the city, and was on leave at the time of the attack. The attackers have been identified as Anwarul Islam, his relative Faridul, Jafarul Islam, Abdul Hosein, Suresh Kumar, Sharmila and Naimul Islam. They were involved in a “social conspiracy” to cause communal disharmony at a private institute, police officials said. The incident also took place on the first anniversary of the December 8, 2014 Uri terror attack.
“The police have registered a case against five persons, including the alleged masterminds and their accomplices, under various sections of the IPC for trying to instigate communal disharmony.
“The incidents happened on the eve of Diwali, where Muslims are expected to celebrate the festival of lights. The attackers, who threw stones at the Muslims from inside the institute’s entrance gate, took out their knives and attacked them along the road,” said a police officer, adding that the entire scene took about two hours to complete, according to some of local residents. It also took two hours to identify the persons behind the attack and ascertain that they had already been apprehended, the officer added.
“The culprits have two to three knives, which they used to threaten the students by throwing them at them while they were inside the institute’s gate,” a policeman said. While the police say there are witnesses to the incident, many of the people who were on duty at the time were not present, or did not give statements at the scene.
