What are social dancing activities?

Social dancing for children includes activities to build confidence, develop dance and enhance social skills.

Dance and social skills development activities include classes and workshops in dance, social dancing, and social music with music professionals, a number of workshops, individual and group dance, dancing with your friends and the community at large, and dance lessons

Dance lessons can be organised by schools and other training providers.

Social dance for young people has different aims from social dancing in older or more traditional cultures. These aims are more about developing social skills and developing your body and socialising skills.

What is ‘family dance’?

Family dance is defined as dancing for your family and friends in community space.

Family members or relatives of friends, or a family of friends, are invited to social dances and activities in community, and are expected to enjoy the social aspect with their partners.

It is important on a number of levels that the young person’s participation is respectful of other participants and that they feel they are being supported as members of their family. The young person’s ability to understand the rules of social dancing may vary from one person to another, and they may need to be helped to understand the dance, or find a new dance partner, and to understand what is expected of them, by their parents, teachers, or other family members

How should I take part?

There are different methods of taking part, and you can take part in community dance activities, in class and workshops, or in a family dance.
