“Photoshop makes a decent living by what I do. You can’t really make any money as a Photoshop artist but if you are very successful, it’s easy to turn around and just do something else. A lot of people have said to me: ‘What about doing it for free?'”
“It took me a year to work up the cash to get the studio I started my career in and it’s a lot of money to pay someone to do what they were already good at.”
Do you think you can get paid to do it?
“Doing something that you love for a living is hard. I think it’s the same with computers. I got to be the best at my job because I liked computers, not because I thought that computer engineers would get paid. Maybe they would but, like with Photoshop itself, my success has come from making people like me.”
How do you feel about people trying to make a living solely on the strength of Photoshop?
“Maybe I make more money as an artist when people think of my name than when people think of ‘Photoshop artists’ but there are lots of other things I know how to do, so that’s how it feels to me. If people were like, ‘Do it for free!’ I’d stop doing it.
“I get paid to take a photo. It’s a lot cheaper in a way to do it yourself and just pay someone and make some money. But I don’t feel like I’m working for free anymore. I think everybody who has worked in the business is in some way an entrepreneur.
Photoshop is for millions of photographers. I like to think it’s one of the most respected brands on the planet. It does have its downsides: it’s been around for a long time and I never actually got rich doing it. We’re lucky we got to do it, but it’s a challenge to do it for free. You can’t make a lot of money if you do it that way.
“The thing I like about it is the freedom it gives you. I could not find a job that was better than what I was able to do then. The people who work for Photoshop are some of the nicest, most genuine people I’ve ever met.
