A recent study of a group of patients with brain tumors reported that, in the absence of neuroblastoma, their disease improved in response to radiation therapy. However, none of the patients could have received the therapy with a lower radiation dose.
“Our data suggest that radiation therapy may have some value in patients with primary brain tumors,” said senior author Daniel S. Naimark, MD, PhD, assistant professor of medicine and of neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh. “Radiation therapy is not without its risks, but it also is highly beneficial in improving patients’ clinical outcomes, so it may provide real value for some patients.”
The data was presented March 8 at an American Neurological Association meeting in Anaheim, Calif. The meeting was organized by the International Neuroblastoma Society, a regional non-profit organization supported by the US National Science Foundation and the American Heart Association, and the National Cancer Institute.
The study was conducted by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Perelman School of Medicine, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and the Center for Cancer and Radiation Oncology and led by Naimark’s team.
