A woman and a man were seriously injured after a truck plowed into a crowd at the annual Bastille Day national military parade near the Champs-Elysees in central Paris on Sunday evening.
French media quoted the driver of the truck as a 54-year-old man from the Riviera city of Nice. Authorities said he was found dead in the truck, which he had driven for a total of 45 minutes.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault urged people in Nice to travel in low-risk groups.
French President Emmanuel Macron, who arrived in the French capital shortly after the accident, tweeted: “My prayers and condolences are with the families and loved ones of victims and the wounded.
“All France stands in solidarity with the victims.”
In a further televised address, he described the victims of the truck attack as “the sons and daughters of France.”
The attack took place just before 7pm local time in the central French city of Nice, close to historic places including the Palais de Justice and the Promenade des Anglais.
At least 31 people were injured in the attack, France’s interior ministry said, including a woman seriously injured in the knee.
The truck struck two barriers along a street near the main shopping district the Promenade des Anglais to the north of the city, but had no intention of stopping as it ploughed into people crossing the area.
The driver, identified early on Monday in local papers only as Mohammed Merah, got out of the car and began running up and down the pedestrian promenade.
People tried to stop him by holding up banners calling for him to stop, but police shot him dead after he crashed into a police vehicle.
The vehicle he was driving – a dark, four-wheel drive – could have easily been mistaken for a truck, but was painted over with a blue flag on the side to warn people not to stop.
Another pedestrian, killed in a separate car accident nearby, had been in his car with seven other people when the attack took place, AFP said.
