A mindset coach is a coach who has a good relationship with the player, who is able to take their thoughts, and make them a reality. A coach who can create a game plan for them and they can play it with confidence. This allows the player to really get into the flow of the game so they have a realistic plan, rather than just knowing the system.
I used to run a mindset coach program with young kids, and was very pleased to see how the results changed over the years from player to player. It is one of the best things that I have done.
I believe in a relationship. One of the biggest things that you need to have is trust and understanding. If you don’t have that, you are going to make these changes and the results aren’t going to be as impactful as possible.
To really do a mindset coach, you’re basically just going to have to know your kid. If you’re playing for a kid, if you’re training a kid, you’ve got to know them to the core.
And you’ve got to listen to their opinion, even if you disagree with it. You’ve got to understand it because they’re right and you’re wrong. And they’re right or they’re wrong. It’s not about what the system is, but about what the player needs at that time.
It’s very important to have that trust and understanding because you’re not going to come out the other end feeling like a genius. But you will have a better game and I believe that in a coaching system that I am running at the time. I believe this system is going to change kids’ lives, especially if I can do something to help them play for the right reasons. That’s what I’m after. And this is my goal as well.
My approach was to help the player find their motivation and create their own personal development strategy. It was really a system based on the mindset of the players, where the coach gave them a plan, gave them the tools and gave them a framework to create their own game.
How do you get the best out of players?
At the end of the day it’s about them. It’s so important to understand their individual motivations. As a coach you have to understand their motivations before you can implement them as a coach. If you are not able to do that, you’re not going to see the changes you need to see.
I would say that I did that
