The new generation of women’s professional soccer, the Women’s Professional Soccer, has been around even longer. This, as has been the case at the University of Michigan, was a tough transition for the university. The women’s program began in 1932, long before the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL). And in fact, the Wolverines’ inaugural football season lasted only six games, before the end of the season because of a series of weather delays.
After spending his teenage and undergraduate years playing competitive soccer, the former U-M man decided he was ready to take up the game’s biggest challenge: becoming professional. And in 1936, he took the plunge and signed with the newly formed Detroit Stars, just a few weeks after joining their team. The Stars would be known for having the largest winning percentage of any team ever to play in the NWSL, a feat that still stands.
With no national league, no sponsors, no money in the bank, the Stars were looking for one thing — a sponsor.
A lot of big names came in to play for the newly formed club. The original owners were George Hermann and Jack Van DeWeghe, two men who had worked together at the company Hermann, Van DeWeghe and Johnson, but also owned a baseball team called the Boston Red Sox.
“Jack’s [Hermann] father left for business and I was left to take care of the family money,” said Van DeWeghe in a recent interview with MLive.com. “So I went to business school and had a contract that we needed to go to this guy’s wife who had a lot of money and was in the insurance business and we agreed to make a joint investment in the club.”
The team then became owned by Bob Mollis, a man who owned a baseball team called The Boston Red Sox. Mollis would move to the United States to run a successful insurance company before leaving it to become a hockey owner and later, a professional tennis player.
