My all-time favourite, as it sounds so peaceful/soft/soulful- and I can imagine when I play it in my home- which room?
When I first started to play on this instrument, I did not even have a ukulele to start with. I used to listen to the ukulele while playing my guitar. My first ukulele to record was the Yamaha RX-103. I recorded it with a Yamaha E-Piano. I then bought a Yamaha RYB-110 and a Yamaha CDP-1011. Both of these instruments can be used on guitar, and I can see a potential of me being able to use them in a piano/guitar based band.
I can see how a lot of musicians could use this technology, but I prefer the more melodic feel of a real ukulele. How do you think ukuleles are changing over time?
In the 70s-80s, it started to change with some other instruments and music. I started to make my own sounds, and some bands started playing in that way. I used to think it was a lot different to play like you used to play, with different sounds and instruments, all the way down to the piano. I also have fond memories of playing with old school ukulele players.
I think the music is changing now. I see today that people are really more interested in new music, in pop, that’s different – like a different sound that’s not similar to anything old school. I think this is the way music will always evolve over the years. The ukulele is a great instrument to experiment with. If it’s not a really different instrument, it’s a good way to test the new sounds. My last concert was a few years ago and there were a lot of people wearing blue dresses wearing ukuleles- so it was beautiful. The fans were really excited to see that. We made a lot of people come back in from the cold.
You’re currently planning a tour with A-Trak as well as a new album coming. When can we expect this to arrive?
We will release an album early in 2016.
What would you do if you were asked to play any song from your latest album? What song would you play at your funeral?
