This isn’t a bad one, given the number of variables involved…
Dylan: I’d probably say that it’s something you have to learn on your own, but maybe that’s a bit unfair. No, the hard thing to learn is rhythm… I try to learn how to play, but sometimes it’s easier just to play a melody for an hour and a half while listening to a little music. But there’s no way I’ll be able to really beat a piano. I’ve still got to look forward to getting better as an arranger…
Did you learn to play a lot of different kinds of instruments?
Dylan: I learned a few things as a child, but I don’t think I learned how to play every instrument by the time I grew up.
I don’t know if you can just call it being an arranger, as in one of those who does a lot of arranging, but is it the job of someone with music education to write melodies and arrangements and arrange things like that? Or do you have to do that from the very start? I imagine it takes a lot of time.
Dylan: No, the whole thing is about knowing that you can get through to the listener, and I’ve got that down. I could never get through to the listener if I didn’t know how to play. I just write songs that I like, and that’s it. There’s never going to be a melody or a beat or anything, it was never about that. It’s about the melodies and the sounds and everything else.
And do you learn to play all of these instruments on your own?
Dylan: Some of them I can write and play, or write it, but it’s never the same thing. It’s always different on the record.
As you look forward to touring more, do you think you might stop thinking in terms of doing a show for three cities, or is there such a thing as touring for life as an actor?
Dylan: I’m sure I’ll do some more of that this summer. I’m going to be in New York [for the tour] and play some more venues.
Did you have to work out how many shows were scheduled against what time of year you wanted to perform?
Dylan: No, that’s probably what it boils down to. It’s difficult to schedule all that stuff because people aren’t playing at the same time as each other.
