The History of Flapper Dress
As the name suggests, flapper dress came into being in the 1850s in the United States. By 1890, several well-known fashion designers were using the name. Most popular as one of the only styles of women’s dress, flapper dress started out as a style of dress for women.
As the dress became popular in the 20th century, more and more people were wearing it, and people like the New York Times referred to it as a “fashion.”
At a time in my life when I was in my early 20s I began to wonder if this style of dress was more fun than it was actually good for me. I was not confident it would lead to more sex. My feelings toward it were mixed. I thought that flapper dress was a very modern and flashy style of dressing. I hoped that it would be glamorous and modern and not tacky, but I didn’t think of it as sexy.
However, when I began to learn more about the history of flapper dress after my husband became our first teacher at our church, he began to understand a bit more of the story behind flapper.
Flapper Dress in History
When the First Ladies started wearing flapper dresses, it was an important symbol of their role in American history. The women wore the dresses to show that they had been active and strong in the cause for which they are associated. They showed that they cared about their country and that they would act in its future interests. The dress encouraged the image that America was a democracy and not a monarchy. Women were more important than men.
