An Indian teenager had a rare and miraculous treatment after suffering from a rare form of a rare brain disorder.
Anand Kishore has been given a second chance at life following a successful surgery in March.
The 16-year-old suffers from a rare, progressive neuromuscular disease called encephalomyelitis, a rare illness that causes severe weakness or paralysis.
Anand’s grandfather, who is an orthopedic surgeon, had spent 12 years working on the boy’s injury.
“He was on crutches for the last 4-5 years. He was having trouble walking and in the middle of the night he would pass out or feel weak,” Gurdev Singh said as he told NBC News’ Misha Kachmar.
A young patient was diagnosed with encephalomyelitis in February 2011, a disease caused by the same bacteria that causes Lyme disease.
Anand’s parents took him to Indian Head Emergency Hospital in South Delhi, where the patient was evaluated.
“The condition was quite serious, not just for me, but for both of us,” Anand’s father, Rajiv, told the Hindustan Times. “I kept on saying ‘this is it! Your boy is going to die and all you do is just sit there, wait for the doctor to get here.'”
Anand’s condition came to a head after he began to suffer from severe abdominal pain shortly after arriving at the hospital. The boy’s mother, Anwar, who lives in Chicago with other members of her family, took him to the hospital after his father couldn’t get a response to several messages.
