The story of what’s happening in Washington, D.C.’s streets, as seen from outside its borders, is one of growing discontent: A wave of protests, mostly against the Republican-led Congress, has put the government on the precipice of a showdown with the incoming Trump administration.
It also illustrates the perils of having the “highest office in the land” in the hands of a Republican Party so obsessed with the president-elect’s divisive rhetoric, and so afraid of the impact that the anger could have on their own governing agenda. But the latest development in an ongoing saga over immigration is particularly stark.
The country’s chief law-enforcement officer, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, appears to be preparing to end DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) — a program that provides work authorizations and protection from deportation to as many as 800,000 people brought to the U.S. as young children. (It’s also not clear when he might do it, at least in full force: The program is currently scheduled to expire in September.) That would be something the Trump administration could do unilaterally, without Senate approval, to give the administration greater leverage as it tries to fulfill President Obama’s executive orders directing federal agencies to not enforce immigration laws.
While lawmakers have made clear they will fight DACA with every political weapon in their toolbox, there’s an increasingly bitter, and perhaps even existential, divide between liberals and conservatives. And Democrats are determined to use the issue to draw out their Republican colleagues.
