If you are one of the many users of Google’s Android operating system who wants to take advantage of Google’s multi-user-desktop technology (MUP), now may be the time to get started. While many Android users don’t take advantage of this feature because they fear the security risks it poses to their systems, now is a good time to learn more about it as Google has just released a new open-source implementation of the feature.
MUP can be found in the Android M developer preview, and as we’ve said repeatedly in the past, it allows a Android device with a physical keyboard and mouse to run multi-user-desktops. And while Google hasn’t updated the MUP driver to be more compatible with modern mobile devices, they do offer a “MUP-Compatible” driver that will run on a wide range of devices.
The new driver, named gnome-mup1a, is available in the repositories of the Android M developer community and is described in more detail in the Android documentation.
While the new MUP driver has no support for multi-user-desktop on top of its MUP backend, it will run at least on some older, legacy Android devices that are supported by the previous MUP driver, with the goal of creating an updated version of the software with the Android M developer preview.
The new version of Gnome MUP uses Android’s new device-independent API call, Android.accessibility.getCurrentContentDescription, which is designed to identify the application’s interface and the system content that can be interacted with by using the native tools (such as the keyboard). It also supports some of the accessibility interfaces built into Android 7.0, such as the View, Keyboard, Touch and TouchList APIs.
The Android.accessibility.getCurrentContentDescription() method uses a new type property, accessible_type, to indicate the type(s) that can be interacted with via the accessibility APIs. If more or the same type is described as a multiple-part word, such as “android.content.applications.view”, it is called a multi-part view; for example, a multi-part view named “android.view.activity” might be described as an Activity or an App.
