I first saw a copy of a book while shopping for books at a bookshop when I was in first grade in the late 1980s. I was at first intimidated and I wanted to know what it was about. I found a copy of the book and read it with the same shyness and concern that I would a later text. The first three pages gave me an idea of what was going on. Here is a bit of the story.
The original title of the book was The Art of Design and as soon as its title had been made public I felt a sense of responsibility for the book and its contents, and decided that I would start making it. I made the following promises: I would create an easy to read guide with no unnecessary or confusing steps, I would have a professional editor and I would do my best. And here is what I did for more than ten years; I did make it and I now see my book the way everybody else does and I have the honor of having a hand in giving the book a name.
My Story
I was born in the 1950s to a loving family, worked on a farm near Lüneburg, Westfalia, Germany, and studied for four years in Dresden, before leaving for France in 1969. After several weeks of holiday, my mother and grandparents took me to the train station and I made the very first step of entering a new land: The German Empire. My mother is German, and my name is German.
I went to study at the University of Frankfurt in 1969, but this was the last year in German in the German-speaking world, and as a result I never took classes at all.
After a few months, I was forced to enroll at the University of the Arts in Cologne, in 1969, where I met a young woman – Joanna König – and fell madly in love. I did not know what the relationship between us could have been before that first time in 1969.
