Because the Rustoleum enamel was designed in a mold, it has a very low tolerance to temperature fluctuations. While the enamel is normally warm enough to withstand some light oxidation, the enamel will never really look new if you allow it to overheat, which is why it needs to be primed in order for it to look new. Priming the enamel is pretty easy: simply pour 3 cups of water in the enamel, let mix, then pour some more water in the mold. The more water you give the enamel, the more the paint will adhere to the surface! You really might also want to consider adding a thin coat of clear coat primer (which can be found a little further down) to help protect the paint surface against moisture during the curing time of the enamel!
Did I mention how easy this process is? Why do I think we all love it so much? Trust me, I’ve tried it countless times with all kinds of enamel paints that have come the world of enamel paint. Why? Because this process takes a lot of time and effort, and is the most effective way to assure that your enamel stays fresh until the paint dries and the protective coat is properly set.
To summarize all this information, here’s one thing to keep in mind: when trying to maintain the look of an already painted surface, if you decide to make it into a lacquer finish as opposed to a lacquer paint, then the enamel should be primed as it cures.
