Yes! We don’t recommend spray painting fabric, but you can coat it with a spray paint called Rustoleum! It’s designed for spray painting fabric, and will cover fabrics up to 6″ thick, but only after it dries. Here are some pictures of a small pattern we made with Rustoleum spray paint.
What is the advantage of using Rustoleum spray paint instead of stain?
Spray paint dries fast! Even if you go over a heavy surface, you will still have a finish. Since Rustoleum spray paint dries quickly, you can use it over fabrics that are heavier than 6″ to 8″, like sweaters, and it will still be completely waterproof even after drying. Rustoleum also has its own special stain that is safe for fabrics and is stronger.
How do I know if my fabric is spray painted, stain, or both?
Rustoleum has a special marker which tells you whether your fabric is spray painted, stains, or both without having to peel the fabric away to see! Rustoleum also has a special marking system for the Rustoleum marker, and your fabric will never need to be re-sprayed!
Can Rustoleum spray paint be used on fabrics that are wet?
Yes! Spray paint can be used over fabrics that are wet, like your shirt, but it dries much faster than stains. You will be able to spray paint over a shirt in one sitting, without even drying it!
What is the effect of Rustoleum spray paint on fabric?
Rustoleum spray paint has a special coating known as “sulfuric acid,” that gives it extra protection from water damage. We suggest using this spray on your fabrics that have been stained or coated with other stains, even if you have no other stain in your project!
