It’s easy, then, perhaps even “effortless,” to dance a couple’s couplet, says the second dancer. “You just have to know your partners!”

A couplet can, of course, involve a variety of different moves, but the general idea is to learn as many different moves as possible, without taking them for granted.

It can take a while. “When you have a new dance you don’t really have any expectations or expectations of what’s going to work,” says the second dancer. “You just sort of go with it and move forward.”
“It’s very hard at times to get over that hump of figuring out what the movement is and making sure you have your body to handle it,” says the first dancer. “If you don’t have good chemistry, then there is no joy in it, and there are definitely no happy couples.”
