It’s not clear yet. The Washington State Veterinary Medical Association did the research and says no. A spokeswoman, Amy McVicker, said veterinarians have a legal responsibility to advise owners about puppy sales, but only to the extent that “the dogs are well enough to do business.”
One of the reasons I bought a puppy was because it was in no way a risk-taking, aggressive, or destructive breed — a dog that would bite you if you let it.
I’m not sure it’s a valid reason for breeders to insist on animal ownership insurance.
Even at your local puppy store, there’s been much complaining about puppy breeders demanding a premium — $1,000 as an out-of-pocket deductible, for example — to cover expensive vet bills you can’t afford.
How much does an in-home dog walker cost?
All dog walkers cost money, but not every dog walker is going to be able to afford all that cost, especially if the dog you are buying needs frequent veterinary and other treatments.
A full-service vet at $150 an hour would cost at least $1,000 per month. A dog walker at $10 an hour or less would cost a little less than $500 a month without extras, and a few hours could be added. Most breeders will offer the services free or at a reduced price.
In the final analysis, it comes down to cost and convenience for you and your dog. I walk dogs on the weekends, which makes it convenient for my work. My dog walks on leash, so it’s relatively easy to get home if I need to change a tire. If you have a younger child, you might have a baby just around the corner, which will make the walk even more convenient for your dog.
What about safety and puppy training?
Safety is of the utmost importance to owners. I’ve had only positive experience of puppies being left alone — on a leash, or in a car. As for training, a thorough check with the owner before the sale will provide you with a clear idea how much and what the pup’s needs are.
Also, before the sale, be sure to ask about the state of any previous licenses or permits, just in case you or your dog were charged for those before.
