It’s simple: live in the moment of the person you’re coaching. The more the mind is in the present, the better.
To coach is to be a bridge between the coach and the client/student.
When I was in college, I spent a lot of time studying and teaching. I knew how to teach and I knew how to live, but I got sucked in by my own personal ideas of what it is I should do — and I could never remember the lesson that mattered. I think when you are living your life as an entertainer, you often live in a trance in the moment. You have little or no attention span. A good life coach can help you stay in focus.
“How does it work?” you may ask.
How does it work? It’s simple — and a good bit of work.
First of all, it would be impossible to learn to live in the flow state as you coach. Instead, you first need to learn that your job is to help the client/student make the move from the moment of what’s past (thinking) to what’s next (feeling). It takes practice to do so.
Second, it needs to be done in the context of your business.
You will not know how to coach if you are working with the client/student alone. I’ve coached in corporate settings, and I saw a tremendous amount of disconnect in my students who were just getting started. We wanted the client/student to know we understood his or her unique situation and the needs of their work, but we were not there to coach them on how to succeed in that world. As a coach, I couldn’t work that way. I was there to coach them towards success and happiness and to encourage the growth of their personalities.
I’d recommend a few weeks of solo coaching in corporate settings for your first year. When those first 10-15 days have passed, you probably won’t be in a position to coach with a client/student the first time you meet. They may get frustrated. Let them be frustrated; let them feel uncomfortable. It takes time to feel like you are living in the flow state — to live in an authentic way to be your best.
There are plenty of books like my bestselling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, but the simplest way to learn to live in the flow state is to see yourself doing it. To see your body, breath, and thoughts as
