The life coach industry is a lucrative one, with a $1 billion market, according to market research firm Euromonitor International.
In 2009, the National Insurance Institute gave out $11.7 million in compensation, up from $6.5 million in 2008.
One of the best-known living coaches in the US is Ann Cushing, an author who claims to have helped over 1,500 people, according to the website Lifehacker.
How do life coaches make so much money?
A 2007 LifeHacker article by Cushing lists two areas where life coaches make a lot:
In sales: $3.2m per year
“Marketers have become a living, breathing human billboards,” according to the article.
“It takes a lot of guts, creativity, and self-esteem to do what Ann Cushing does on a daily basis – and you’ve probably come to learn, that even the most successful people don’t have that much time in their lives.”
In consulting: $4.9m per year
“Ann Cushing and her colleagues have worked with every major company in the world, including Nike, Intel, Facebook, PepsiCo, Bank of America, Apple, Time Warner, Coca-Cola, Toyota and more.
“She has built her reputation by being the ‘voice of reason’ to clients in order to guide them on how to make positive life choices.”
Another Lifehacker article published in June 2004 describes how Cushing and her brother, David, founded the ‘The Life Coach Project’ in 1999, after their mother passed away.
The pair were awarded $2.7 million by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which awarded a total of $3.2 million for the project.
And it wasn’t just for life advice books. Cushing also wrote a book on the benefits of yoga and meditation.
