Sure! Making things is a great way to make a living and earn money.
I’m thinking about getting started. How much money are you making right now?
Well, it depends, but it would be awesome if I could turn out about $1,000 per month with this idea. I just had a meeting with a friend of mine who runs a furniture rental business called Bespoke Furniture for people who are making furniture and accessories. Now, they aren’t furniture vendors. They are furniture dealers. I can see building some decent business selling my product. The main problem is that for me, the price is so high, my business would be limited by the size of the business.
But my personal business could have some benefits – you have to work. You have to pay bills. And they have a long commute, so there’s a price to pay for all the things I’d have to do to make this work.
So how much money would you have to make before you start making furniture that people are actually taking home to be used every day?
I think I’d have to have more than a thousand foot square in order to get started with that.
Oh, so I have to work at least 3 months a year.
I’d have to. And I could probably start a furniture business that would last 3-4 years, but I would really have to do more than 1,000 square feet per month.
I’ve been working for a long time. In the past, you worked for a company called EMC Design and in the past, you’ve spoken out in favor of the right to make clothing or do anything to increase your personal profit. When you talk about your business, it’s more often that you talk about this idea of a business. So can you talk a little bit about that part of your life?
I do enjoy a good bit of creative work. I’ve been able to use that creative input to produce a lot of fun ideas. And I’ve made a lot of interesting merchandise for people with serious illnesses.
Do you feel that you’ve earned that creative business experience?
I’ve had plenty of time to learn the skills required to do business. And I do think I’ve earned that experience and I’ve had the opportunity to use that experience to create some creative goods.
Do you use all of those creative skills to make furniture that other women buy?
