The government said it was investigating reports that thousands of US-made F-16 fighter jets could be sold to Turkey
Turkey is to purchase more than 60 F-16 fighter jets from the United States following a review ordered by Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
The defence ministry said on Friday it was investigating reports that upwards of 6,000 aircraft could be shipped to the country if a planned deal fell through.
The order, which would be worth about $2bn (£1.7bn), was initially estimated at $600m but has since been reduced by over $400m.
“We hope to make a significant difference for the Turkish armed forces, and we will work with the US for the purchase of the new F-16 aircraft,” Defence Minister Fikri Isik said at a news conference.
The American Defence Security Cooperation Agency, which oversees trade deals, had to decide “whether our concerns had been satisfied”, Isik said. “We have determined in our investigation that some items of significant interest remain unresolved,” he added.
It was not immediately clear what, if any, impact the investigation would have. A defence ministry official told the Associated Press that only a “slight” reduction in the original estimate had been made.
The aircraft, made in the 1970s, are popular with the Turkish Air Force and are believed to be of significant military value, particularly in the air-to-air role.
The United States announced earlier this week that it would suspend delivery of new F-16 jets for 12 years, prompting Turkey’s opposition parties to call for its immediate cancellation. In Washington, a spokesman declined to comment on the latest announcement.
While Washington was expected to continue deliveries, there is growing concern that Ankara could be able to take advantage of its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea.
Erdoğan has previously said a key component to achieving victory in the Syrian civil war was a no-fly zone to protect Turkish and Russian warplanes flying in nearby skies.
