Is it either the type you have a good grasp of or the type that you don’t?
Mike: What is it with coaching?
John: It’s a big topic. So I’ve talked to a lot of coaches who don’t understand. They are a part of an organization, but their job is to coach the players to be better. So in that context, I would say it can be both. On the one end where you have this one-to-one relationship with the players and all of a sudden their skills are perfect, you can build perfect lines and perfect combos. On the other end, you’ve got great coaching, but you still feel like you’re going to lose players over time. It’s like a carpenter. You don’t want him to make the door. You’d rather have a guy who just makes the door.
Mike: Exactly, exactly. That’s why I say it’s like a carpenter. You want to help him build the first house, and then you know there’s a little nugget somewhere in there which you like. You think you’re getting him somewhere, but you haven’t found it. You don’t yet know the full context of where his strengths and weaknesses are. And so you don’t know what to make of him and where he’s a potential risk. So I think it’s very hard for the coaches to understand how you do it. You don’t have a coach that understands that. So I’ve talked to a lot of coaches who didn’t care much what you were saying before, which is fine, because you were trying to say some really good things, to start with. However, I think you’re going to go down that road.
John: Yes, I know. I didn’t think that I was going to talk about coaching. That was one of the reasons it was such a good topic for me to talk about, because I have experience with this type of thing. Some of the former coaches I talked to didn’t know what I was talking about, either. Which was fine. But after awhile I started to realize that is not necessarily their fault. They didn’t know anything about it, either. So we have to find the good teachers for these kids and really try to teach them the right way. And to do that, you have to have a solid foundation so they can build from there.
Mike: Right, so how do you do it? How do you get a really good coach?
