It’s pretty straightforward when it comes to learning the art form, however. The more you do it the easier it is to do well.
When I was young, my friends and I would compete and win various competitions with our school paint kits until we were able to paint the most impressive murals we could manage. We were only kids at the time, but we didn’t stop until we won everything we owned. So, once I got good at art and started learning the craft, there were no limits to my creativity.
Now, in my late 20’s I do everything at home and at a slower pace. I have a full time job, and I don’t have the stress I used to have. I now teach classes to my younger friends so that they are in no danger (although they still get a kick out of painting things as well).
I do have to say, however, that it does take quite a bit of planning before you can get a successful piece up.
How long do you normally make a mural and how many times do you need to paint it?
That depends. At the start I usually paint three to four walls in an hour. Sometimes I have to put down markers or paint smaller murals that come from a random group of people.
After that I usually paint a different piece every few days. Often I’ll go home at 4am so that I can paint something else before I go to sleep so that there is always something new to look for.
So, for a full-time job, it depends on what I want to do! I make money with my writing and social media skills, but also have a part-time business. I also make enough to buy my parents a house in the Netherlands, so that’s not a bad thing at all in my eyes.
If you had to sell or give away a piece of art if it was worth anything, which would you choose and why?
That would be my mother’s work! It’s so beautiful and unique and she painted it herself.
What are the most memorable graffiti creations that you’ve seen?
There are a lot of amazing murals being painted from different parts all over the US by various artists. That includes in the big cities we live in as well as suburbs.
