“I feel Waltz means to turn down the ball as a matter of course. He’s a man of contradictions. I was very upset when I found out that he had signed one of my songs, ‘Bartender,’ because I’ve been thinking about using it since I first heard it, but it meant so much more to me to turn it down. And I’m sure he’s really grateful to me for saying yes.”
When he is not playing the show as a soloist, as in a two-week series at the Bowery Theater, Waltz has been recording a set of 12 or 18 songs that will be included in his new album, Outtasite. The album is scheduled to be released this spring.
Waltz, who also has a new album in progress, performed his last show, “The Temptation of Koko,” last Friday. He’ll join The New York Public Library and The New York Public Library Band for the New York Public Library Benefit for Children’s Hospitals at the Museum of the City of New York on April 8.
“Waltz has been doing solo shows with these wonderful musicians for a long time, but it didn’t work out,” said Ed Caffrey, who organizes the Bowery Benefit. “We wanted to try this format, and I thought the whole show would be a good experiment.”
Caffrey added: “I think that Waltz, like all great soloists, is really sensitive to what’s happening to him. It’s a different time, so it’s really cool to have him as a member of your band.”
During the show earlier in the month, The New York Public Library hosted a reception at the library to support Children’s Hospitals. At the reception, Ed Caffrey presented Waltz with a letter signed by more than 1,000 people who had bought tickets to hear his rendition of “Bartender” at the library.
“That’s one more letter you can find if you’re at the library,” Caffrey said. “It was very thoughtful. Waltz is a true person. He was thinking of kids. He wanted them well cared for by their family so he was just trying to help and share his passion and love with someone and help out. That’s what he really wants to do from his heart and from his mind.”
