Historian and author David F. Rothbard says that the term “petting party” was taken from the German term “Klarer Petterspiel,” which means “party of the petting.” “Petting parties may or may not promote pets—in fact, I’ve heard the phrase used to describe a party whose purpose is to encourage people to bring their dogs ‘to work,’ as if pets were a sort of necessary condition for working,” Rothbard observes. “The concept was first popularized by a German artist named Hans Klein, who exhibited his paintings of workers in an ‘eccentric’ petting party at the Kunsthaus Berlin.” A similar concept of a “petting party” was popularized by the popular German film star and actress Anna Z. (Anny) Wagner, who popularized the idea with her 1937 film “The Petting Party.”

Rothbard cites historian Thomas T. Hughes, who says that the term “petting party” was used by a German newspaper columnist in 1921. According to Hughes, the slang term also comes from the German term “Klarer Petterspiel,” which literally means “party of the petting.” In the 1920s, the expression “Petting Parties” was popularized by the popular German film star and actress Anna Z. (Anny) Wagner, who popularized the concept with her 1937 film “The Petting Party.”

Petting parties or petting parties are common in the 1920s, however. According to the American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (2013), “Petting Party” referred to a gathering of three or more people that “invited, encouraged or rewarded people to take up as many hands as they could manage while watching a show.” According to The Public Domain, “Petting Parties” have become a term of endearment in contemporary slang and have become synonymous with “sauna party.”
